Decide if it’s more important that your title content is displayed exactly as you want in SERPs or that they communicate the correct information to Google. Obviously, tight copywriting is still important here, I’m just saying that I see a lot of functionality lost to inflexible adherence to display guidelines.
Maybe you can do both. Chances are Google will pick the relevant info and display that anyway. The title of this page is 88 characters and you still got here.
For meta descriptions – stick to the display limits, they’re all about the CTR.
